Owls are still in the area. On a walk at dusk we could hear the distinctive call around 730pm. We have a large number of Eucalyptus palms and citrus nearby, the seem to favor tall perches. I notice blackbirds harassing hawks during the day but never at dusk or after dark.

  1. Thank you for the update. If you have any evidence that Barney is still around, would love to hear it. Maybe hearing 2 owls calling might indicate that possibility. Maybe there's still time for a second clutch attempt.

  2. I think I can actually recognize some individuals by the sound of their calls. I noticed that when the recent hatch of owlets were in the nest for example, each seemed to have a distinct voice. I did not recognize the call that I heard while walking at dusk two days ago. Yes, I have heard a kind of clicking that a pair seems to make when flying near each other- I wonder if anyone has categorized the different sounds emitted and attempted to determine the significance of the various types.Also- is there a rodent survey or any attempt among biologists to track the rise and fall of mouse or rat populations? I did find a very healthy looking gopher snake in my garden- or perhaps I should say it found me, yesterday. While watering my half wine barrel raised bed vegetable garden something thumped on my left shoe- I was startled to see that a brightly colored gopher snake had dropped down , scooted over my foot and was hightailing it away from the raised bed, apparently in response to the spray of water.
